What to expect at my Initial Psychiatric Assessment

Your appointment will last up to 1 hour. During your initial assessment she promises to listen, to be non-judgemental, empathetic, and supportive while thoroughly assessing and diagnosing the following conditions:

Menopause

PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder)

Clinical depression

Anxiety

OCD

PTSD

Personality disorder

Bipolar Affective disorder

Effects of chronic stress

ADHD

It may be recommended that you have a blood test (additional charge) prior to starting medication which can be arranged separately.

Dr. Megan Stevens will recommend a follow-up treatment plan based on your needs during your initial assessment. After your initial assessment you will be asked to book in a follow up treatment plan appointment where your medication and treatment will commence. This can include psychotropic medication, hormone replacement therapy, nutritional psychiatry assessments, yoga with mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques and pregnancy yoga, all of which are followed up on and delivered by Dr Megan Stevens.

Dr Stevens will combine your medical consultation with mind and body awareness techniques (Yoga and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques).

Medication follow up and medical advice - Your medication will be reviewed, prescriptions arranged and sent to you via an online pharmacy (CloudRX) and medical issues discussed.

Yoga and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction - Dr. Megan Stevens teaches patients how to listen to their body, attaining enhanced bodily and mental control through the use of Yoga and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques. These techniques can improve the ability to recognise early signs of relapse, manage stressful situations, improve sleep, anxiety, depression, weight gain and pain tolerance. She accomplishes this through the teaching of grounding techniques, pranayama (breathing), and asanas (yoga postures). Asanas are tailored to each patient's physical health, strength, and flexibility. There is no prerequisite knowledge of Yoga required. Dr Megan Stevens is qualified to safely teach pregnancy Yoga.

Nutritional Psychiatry - This entails a thorough examination of your diet, as well as optional blood tests for B12, ferritin, folate, FBC, lipids (cholesterol, LDL, HDL, Non HDL, CHO:HDL ratio, TG, TSH, and vitamin D). Dr. Megan Stevens will work with you to optimise your food intake to assist you in meeting the recommended daily intake for relevant minerals and vitamins to support your mental health, physical health, and weight management.

Dr Megan Stevens will continue to offer follow up sessions and work with you for as long as you wish.

Troublesome symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, low mood, concentration, panic attacks and sleep issues can develop in a previously well individual during the time leading up to, during and after the menopause or as your hormones change during your cycle. Pre-existing mental health issues may worsen during hormonal fluctuations. Undiagnosed and untreated the hormonal changes can have significant implication on your long term health, relationships and work.

Dr Megan Stevens conducts a thorough assessment of all of your symptoms and works with you to develop the most effective menopause, PMS or PMDD treatment strategy for you. Blood tests for hormones and other bodily functions may be recommended to exclude other causes of your symptoms and to monitor any treatments started if required.

During your initial appointment, Dr Megan Stevens will advise on diagnosis, supplementation, lifestyle changes and recommend specific interventions.

Please then book a Psychiatric Follow-Up and Medication Review appointment where Dr Megan Stevens will discuss your blood tests results, confirm your diagnosis and start treatment.
